To: Tim Craine, President, Faculty Senate

From:  Kristine Larsen, Chair, 2005-6 Promotion and Tenure Committee

Date: May 6, 2006

Subject: Report on present and past P&T decisions

Enclosed are the statistics requested per your email of 4/25/06. The current year’s statistics are from my records, while those from previous years were compiled by Anne Alling (Human Resources).

In reading the statistics, the following explanations are required:

1)      “Tenure” decisions include both penultimate and non-penultimate candidates.

2)      A small number of coaches and librarians are included in the statistics.

Members of the Promotion and Tenure Committee met to discuss both the statistics and their experience with the process this year, and wish to include the following notes in this report:

1)      In many cases, the sample sizes are small and therefore the statistics should be interpreted with this in mind

2)      Discussions with the President concerning the Committee’s recommendations were limited.

3)      For the current year, there were five decisions made by the President to not recommend (in essence, to deny) promotion or tenure where the decisions of the DEC, Dean, and Promotion and Tenure Committee were unanimously favorable. The Committee did not find any such cases in the previous five years’ statistics.

4)      The Committee decided to list in table form the statistics for successful promotion to full professor according to gender, both per year and as an aggregate for the time period studied.

I’m sure you understand that, for confidentiality reasons, neither I nor the other members of the Committee can comment much further than these basic statistics. We hope these statistics further thoughtful discussion of the Promotion and Tenure process on our campus.

*How to read these tables: In 2005-6, there were 4 male candidates who were favorably recommended for tenure by their DEC, Dean, P&T Committee, and the President, while 1 male candidate was recommended by the DEC, P&T Committee, and President, but not recommended by his Dean.
